Our First Visit to the Dentist

June 11th was the girls first trip to the dentist.  I held off on scheduling because I was really worried how they would respond.  They were so terrified of our pediatrician for a long time and I thought the dentist with all of his tools would be even worse.  In the end, waiting really was a good idea.  We found a pediatric dentist and the office was perfect.  Their kid friendly office was so cute.  They had games in the waiting room with adorable brightly colored decorations.  The office was completely open so you could always see what was going on and the dentist chairs were all different solid colors.  The top part of the walls were covered with pacifiers that kids have given up.  Our dentist had a yellow shirt on with a big red bow tie and he just looked so fun!

Mya went first and happily hopped in the chair.  We were sitting right next to the chair and Stella was on Wes' lap.  The dentist and his hygienist encouraged us to take a bunch of pictures throughout and were very upbeat with the girls.  They explained each tool and had them touch it before using it.  They also got sunglasses to protect them from their "sun" (the overhead light) and a mirror they could hold to see what was going on.  At another chair nearby a really young little girl was screaming her head off and was having to be held down by her mom.  Mya acted like she didn't even hear it.  Stella was very focused on her and we kept coaxing her to watch Mya instead of the other little girl.  She did and when her turn came up she was just as excited as Mya.

Across the office Wes noticed one of the other dentists calling the Tooth Fairy on a phone, while his little patient watched in amazement.  The dentist was saying "Hello Tooth Fairy.  Yes, he did have some cavities but it wasn't his fault.  He does a nice job brushing.  You can leave him so money for his tooth that fell out."  :)

The girls ended up getting a glowing report - no cavities (just like their Mama - I've never had one!!!) and he said he could tell we take care of their teeth.  He showed us proper brushing techniques and how to floss their teeth.  It is different when you are doing for someone else.  Stella still has one molar that needs to come in yet, but Mya has all of her's.  The dentist said they did so good that next time they are able to schedule to have the hygienist do their cleaning and he will do just the check-up because they were so well-behaved.  They each got a new toothbrush and a flossing tool and then were able to choose out of a prize box.  It was a very positive experience and I just couldn't be happier with the office we chose.
